installed between May 1669 and August 1670.
Sculptor
- Lazzaro Morelli Morelli was the most prolific of the
sculptors working for Bernini on the colonnade statues, with
over 45 saints attributed to him.
Height
- 3.1 m. (10ft 4in) travertine The pope is shown with
open arms and bearded face. In pontifical dress, he does not
have a tiara, in memory of his abdication only five months
after his election.
Peter
Celestine was a monk and hermit who founded the order of
Celestines. He was elected pope as Celestine V when in his
seventies, and resigned after five months in 1294 to return to his humble
monastic life. Pope Boniface VIII imprisoned him in the castle
at Fumone, where he died
